StenEd theory is a conflict-free theory created by the StenEd company. It is considered to be a longer, and more stroke-intensive theory with a focus on writing words out phonetically to completion. However, it does have principles and briefs that allow for shorter and faster writing. StenEd is a widely taught professional theory.

Plover theory, and by extension Lapwing theory, are based on StenEd theory and thus share a lot of base characteristics.

History

StenEd has been in existence for over 40 years.[1]

Primary Characteristics

StenEd is a primarily phonetic-based theory that includes some rules based on spelling. Most words are written out, and by default endings such as -D, -Z, and -G are added as separate strokes.

Although StenEd is considered a longer theory requiring more strokes, it lends itself to shortening techniques well and many users have reported that incorporating techniques from Magnum theory is smooth and compatible with a StenEd base.

Acquisition

StenEd theory is available for purchase through Realtime Coach. Available textbooks and dictionaries can be viewed on the StenEd website here.

StenEd can also be learned by attending a court reporting school that has been licensed to teach StenEd. A list of such schools can be viewed here.
