Each writer is set up differently with Plover. This page serves as a reference for all the different set up pages and instructions.

Hobbyist writers

All the hobbyist steno writers use the Gemini PR protocol by default:

  • TinyMod
  • Nolltronics Ecosteno
  • Nolltronics Multisteno
  • StenoKeyboards Asterisk
  • StenoKeyboards Polyglot
  • StenoKeyboards Uni
  • Starboard

Stenograph Machines

Manufactured by the company Stenograph, this includes machines such as:

  • Stentura
  • Elan Mira
  • Elan Cybra
  • Diamante
  • Wave
  • Luminex

To set up a Stenograph writer which connects by USB cable, you will need to:

  1. Install the plover-stenograph plugin, available via the plugins manager in Plover.
  2. Install the drivers from Stenograph, which is the first download available on this page, "Stenograph Writer USB Drivers".
  3. In the machine dropdown in Plover, select Stenograph USB, and if needed, use the Configure menu to make sure the right port is selected.

These instructions have been tested on Windows and for any writers that connect via serial cable or other cable, the instructions may be more complicated.

For more specific tutorials, follow the links below. If you have a machine that does not have a tutorial yet, please contribute to the wiki by writing a tutorial to help others.
